Survived by Few - National Archive and Library of Puerto Rico
On Saturday, November 11, the General Archive and National Library of Puerto Rico inaugurated the exhibition
Survived by Few, the first large-format solo exhibition by interdisciplinary artist and Boricua writer
Javier E. Piñero. The photo essay, published as the cover of Smithsonian magazine's June 2023 issue, combines two years of documentation and research into a narrative fueled by a concern for cultural amnesia in Puerto Rico and how colonial modernization has stripped the community of access to traditional/native art/craft practices and education as evidence of epistemic violence. Piñero's images, interviews, and texts are archival efforts and attempts to connect with what he understands as cultural rights.
